Subject: "looking down on"

There are not very many of us that would spend great time and effort on, and, in addition, give our only child in sacrifice for an amoeba. In fact, I would feel very safe in saying no rational person would. Amoebae are single celled creatures with no definite form (like a blob) and are parasitic in people. (Remember, we don't like parasites) Let's face it, to us, amoebae are nothing. It would seem even more ludicrous for a very important person like the President of the United States to do what I mentioned in the first sentence above. We would all express utter disbelief that such could or would happen. Amoebae are just too far below us for such to be true.

Most people don't realize the great gulf between God and man. We seem to think, or at least act like, it wasn't any great step for God the Father to look at us in such love (for after all, "what's not to love?") that He would send His Son in sacrifice for us. We think it was just a slight transition from His throne in Glory to the manger in Bethlehem. Think on these verses ...................

Adonai is high above all nations, His glory above the heavens. Who is like Adonai our God, seated in the heights, humbling Himself to look on heaven and on earth. (Psalm 11 3:4-6)

I look at the stars spread across the heavens and am awed at the grandeur God has displayed there. When we see pictures made from "deep space" of "wall to wall" stars spread across unfathomable distances, we really rock back and say, "Wow! What a God!!!" We think "what a picture of God's Glory," but, as our verses tell us, God's Glory is "high above the heavens!” They don't even approach His Glory, yet we cannot begin to comprehend how awesome they are.

The last sentence of these verses speaks volumes to me, as I hope they will you. God has to “humble Himself” to "look down" on all the heavens and the earth in their entirety. As astounding as it may seem, our looking down on the lowly and totally insignificant amoeba pales in comparison to God's looking down on this magnificent universe, much less His zeroing in on each and every individual human being. God is God, totally, eternally, self-existent. All created life in our universe is bound together in that each affects the other in some way. The tiny plankton in the sea affects our lives, because they are a part of a gigantic food chain that ultimately enters our sphere of existence, influencing our health and well-being. They also take part in the process of cleaning our seas of smaller materials that would eventually cloud the waters with debris inedible to the larger creatures of the chain, so again, they affect us, even though they may seem inconsequential to us. God, on the other hand, is not in the slightest dependent on, or needful of, any thing other than Himself. HE was, before we, or anything else were.

HE is totally Holy, set apart, from all else. HE doesn't need us, we need Him, yet HE came down to us. HE humbled Himself beyond all measure to even consider us, much less, come and live among us. Then HE did the unthinkable; HE allowed, yes, even instigated, the sacrifice of His Son, God Himself, for us who were and are parasites, living off of Him. While in Viet Nam, I burned off many leeches, parasitically trying to live off my blood. Each of us will viciously snuff out the life of any mosquito that foolishly attempts to do that same thing to us. We instinctively hate and "look down" on parasites. We call anything that exists off the life of the host “bloodsuckers.” Dreadful, despised creatures they are, not worthy of our love and sacrifice, yet we fit that same description when held up towards God. Brothers and sisters, if we honestly look into the mirror of God's Word, we see the truth of our lowliness before the Ruler of all creation.

The wonder of it all is, though, that God, when HE looks down on us, doesn't "look down" on us. HE comes to us and makes us His own, promising us we will share in the glorious inheritance of Jesus, His Son. What a wonderful God is our God. Lift up your voice in praise to Him today.
