From: Ben Kelley
Subject: Stretched out and bent down

I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD. (Psalms 40:1-3 (KJV)

I don't know the picture you have of our Father God.  Some have a vague concept of a great King on a throne, ruling from that position of authority.  They picture Him as awesome, but austere, a Father too busy to take the time to focus on His child.  That is not our God, at all.  Our Father, when we approach Him, turns and inclines (stretches toward us) and hears (not missing a thing) every word of our crying out to Him.  HE cares, more than we can know, for each of His children.  Our cries to Him do not "go in one ear and straight out the other."  Picture what David has described in these verses from Psalm 40:  God inclined unto Him.  That Father on His throne stretched out and bent down to hear His child's cry.  Picture a little child running up to his Dad, while crying out his problem.  That Dad gets down on his knee, on a level with his child, and listens intently to the complaint.  He doesn't upbraid his child for crying, nor does he ridicule him or scoff at the problem.  He hears and responds by helping his child.  He solves the problem, then helps his child learn and grow, making sure his child is calmed and settled.  That's our Heavenly Father, our Abba, Papa, Daddy.

That response is what David got as he waited patiently for His Abba to respond to his cries.  David did not rant and fuss at His God, demanding an immediate answer, like a pouting, spoiled brat.  He knew His God loved and cared for him.  He knew HE would pay attention and answer.  God did not require him to make his prayer in a certain manner or order, as some teach today.  He just cried out to the Lord.  When my daughter was little (well, even now), if she was upset and in need, all she had to do was cry out to me.  She did not have to preface it with flowery prose, like "Oh wonderful Father of mine, earner of our bread and payer of our bills."  No, when she was in need, all she had to do was cry, "Dad!", and I would answer.  My attention would automatically turn to her, the focus of my concentration came off whatever it had been on and shined directly on her.  This was and is true because she was/is my child.  That relationship comes before other duties and responsibilities.  The same is true of our relationship with our Dad in Heaven.  Remember, HE is not sitting up on His throne with a stiff, upright neck.  When we, His beloved children cry out to and wait patiently for Him, HE stretches out and bends down, listening and responding in absolute perfect and complete love.

Your Daddy above loves you.  Talk to Him.

And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will He be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the Lord is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him. (Isaiah 30:18)
